Special Initiatives

These programs focus on meeting more specific needs of Club members. Their scope is broad so they involve several Core Program Areas.

Other Program Areas

In the winter of 2016, we launched a new initiative called the Young Mentors Movement. This program was started as an answer to the violence taking place in Cedar Rapids. Through the Young Mentors Movement, our youth, along with the help of their families, are preparing for higher education and/or entering the workforce. The mission of this initiative is to provide models of excellence and leadership, to ultimately create pathways for youth to higher education - post secondary, vocational or trade - so they may lead meaningful lives of purpose, in service to the community and their fellow citizens.
Last winter/spring, The Young Mentors collected food to donate to the food pantry, met with Brea Love from KCRG TV9 to learn about the field of broadcast journalism, worked with Rey Rodriquez from Cedar Rapids Bank & Trust to learn about the importance of financial stability, plus, gained valuable presentation skills by working with the Toastmasters. In addition to these activities, they met with mentors once or twice a month and they, along with their parents, went through ACT Therapy, to help them learn to better deal with life's difficulties.
