Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Boys & Girls Club?  Boys & Girls Clubs of Cedar Rapids is affiliated with Boys & Girls Clubs of America.  We are the fastest growing Youth Development Agency in America with over 4000 Clubs across the United States and on Military bases across the world.

Where are you located in Cedar Rapids?  In Cedar Rapids we have four sites.  The Main Unit located at 1501 Ellis Blvd NW is closed due to the floods in June 2008.  Our South Unit is located at First Congregational Church UCC (361 17th Street SE and Johnson Elementary School of the Arts), our NE site is located at Echo Hill Church (1700 B Ave NE and Polk Elementary School) a third site at The Salvations Army (1000 C Ave NW) and we just opened up at Taylor Elementary (720 7th Ave SW).  We are now serving all four quadrants of Cedar Rapids!

How much does it cost to attend the Club?  Our yearly membership cost $12.00.  We will never turn away a child that needs the Club.  We totally scholarship over 75% of our members.

What makes a Boys & Girls Club unique?  We offer our members Hope & Opportunity.  We do this many ways.  First, we are the large scale, primary prevention agency in Cedar Rapids.  Second, have established goals that are simple.

  • Get “kids off the streets” during the times they need us the most.
  • Provide kids with what they need the most.
    • A safe, fun place to be.
    • Adult staff and role models that care about them.
    • A place where a kid can be a kid.
  • Make intergenerational life changes.  We want our members to realize they have a chance to beat the streets and have a different life style then they have now.
  • We provide a variety of daily programs and activities.  We have two game rooms and a gymnasium.  We also have an Arts & Crafts room, Health & Life Skills room and various Character and Leadership programs.  We offer homework help and special tutoring in our Power Hour Room.  Finally we have programs that are specifically designed for Career development.

How many youth do you serve daily?  That depends on the time of the year.  During the school year we will serve between 150 and 200 members daily.  During the summer we will serve between 275 and 325 members daily.  We have about 800 members.  Over the course of a year we will serve about 3000 different youth.  Some are members, some are day visitors and others maybe kids that participate in our leagues or attended events like the Friday Night Jump Off.
