FAST FACTS

OUR MISSION:
To inspire and enable all young people,
especially those that need us most,
to reach their full potential
as productive, caring, responsible citizens.
 
OUR CLUBS:

· Full-time professional staff

· Open Monday-Friday

School Hours 2:45pm – 6:45pm

Summer Hours 8:30am – 5:30pm

· Open to all children ages 6 – 18 years old

· Varied and diversified program

· Dedicated facility for youth development and programs

 
 
 
 
 
OUR FACILITIES:
    • Main Unit is located at 1501 Ellis Blvd NW (this site flooded in June 2008)
    • South Unit partners withJohnson Elementary School of the Arts and First Congregational UCC at 361 17th St SE
    • Echo Hill partners with Polk Elementary and is located at 1700 B Ave NE
    • The Salvation Army located at 1000 C Ave NW
    • Taylor Elementary 720 7th Street SW

OUR KIDS:

· Serving 225 youth daily during school year and 325 youth daily during summer

· 70% of our members live at or below the poverty level.

· Median household in both our service area is between $12,000 and $25,000.

· Taylor Elementary School in our service area reports approximately 60% participates in the free and reduced lunch program.

· Johnson Elementary School of the Arts reports that 30% of the students have at least one parent that is incarcerated.

· 50-60% of these students are from single-parent families and many do not live with a biological parent, but with a grandparent or aunt.

OUR YOUTH DEVELOPMENT STRATEGY:

We promote and enhance the development of boys and girls by instilling:

  • A sense of competence
  • A sense of usefulness
  • A sense of belonging
  • A sense of power or influence

ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP DUES FOR CLUB MEMBERS: $12.00

  • over 70% of our Members are scholarshipped

ACTUAL COST TO SERVE EACH MEMBER: $750.00

OUR ANNUAL BUDGET: $750,000

History of the Boys & Girls Club of Cedar Rapids

April 13, 1877 Lots 13 & 14 were bought on Block 61 by O.N. Hull & S. Louisa Hull.

April 28, 1910 Ernst Edward Lambertsen Deeds Lot 14 to St. James Methodist Episcopal Church.

October 28, 1921 Peter Blisch Deeds Lot 13 to St. James Methodist Episcopal Church.

August 27, 1954 St. James Methodist Episcopal Church sells Lot 13 & 14 to the YMCA for $8,500.00.

September 1, 1954 Ribbon is cut to open the doors of the Ellis Community Center.

June 8, 1955 YMCA files Articles of Incorporation

Summer 1958 First Brick addition made to the building for a teen center.

1960 The administrative section and game room (Mini Gym)

July 19, 1963 Old St. James Church torn down.

February 18, 1964 the pool, handball court, locker rooms and weight room were added.

June 1980 YMCA celebrates 25th Anniversary.

March 18, 1990 YMCA holds meeting to inform public that by August it will close the Ellis Branch.

December 1, 1991 Friends of the Ellis Community Center open up the Ellis Community Center.

November 16, 1993Ellis Community Center Charters with Boys & Girls Club of America.

August 1997 the Ellis Community Center Boys & Girls Club closes pool and decides to focus totally on serving underprivileged youth in the neighborhood. The name is changed to the Boys & Girls Club of Cedar Rapids.

April 2004 the Club opens a second site at First Congregational Church UCC on the SE side of Cedar Rapids.
June 2008 the epic floods in Cedar Rapids destroyed the building on Ellis Blvd.  We took over 30' of water losing the buidling and the entire contents of our main facility.
